The online presence and image of any business is quite important because it can be the difference when a customer decides to buy your product or your competitor’s. It is like a presentation card which people can check online before getting in touch or buying a product.
One element of this online image comes through the social networks. And guess what:
What is the first thing someone notices when they see your facebook page? Check how many likes you got.
A page with lots of likes shows trust and credibility even though it may not seem too logical because sometimes quantity has nothing to do with quality. Independently of the logic, what is actually true is that a page with thousands of followers, at first sight, brings about some sort of social approval which in consequence attracts attention and possible followers.
There are many ways and strategies to increase the likes of your page. I’m not going to tell you the top 10 most effective tactics in the whole world to increase your followers, mainly because I don’t believe in magic recipes nor universals. Each audience behaves differently depending on what is your page about, who you are, and what resonates better with you.
Less intrusive methods to increase your followers:
1. Work related posts
As always the main thing is to create content of value for your audience. If your work is about foods and vegan diet, maybe you can write about 10 easy recipes anyone could do, or what are the most beneficial foods, why people should stop eating meat...
In my situation my work is about websites and online marketing so I speak about online presence in social networks, what are the most important features of a webpage, how to work it, why I think online entrepreneurship is the future of millennials, or why is very important to take care of your business’s online image.
The point is to write about your work. If there are people who liked your page is because in some way they are interested in what you have to say. So you just have to write to generate value for your audience without the need to buy your product. Create free value and share your knowledge to attract new followers, increase credibility, build trust and possible future customers.
In the first example, that person created value by sharing 10 easy food recipes without the need of buying his product. Maybe in the future I’d purchase his product because I liked the free foods he taught me to make. Or in my case I produce value by sharing techniques I like the most to structure your homepage. And maybe in the future you remember my tips and would like to count with me for your project.
2. Tell stories
Stories are moving. A tale, narrative, novel, documentary… any form of telling something through a story sometimes results very interesting and engaging.
This section is about sharing your personal story and how it is related with your business’s story. It’s also about telling experiences about your job, your service, or your clients if they allow you. In essence any kind of anecdote because stories are cool.
If you don’t know what to talk about I give you 3 stories you can perfectly elaborate:
1. Tell me why you decided to create/join your business, your blog, or working in what you do. What went through your mind to make that decision? How were the first steps?
2. Tell a story of how you grew professionally, what went wrong along the way? What went right? What would you like to achieve in one year?
3. Or even an invented tale in which you talk about the main problems you find in your job, or how to help other people who work in the same field?
Imagination is powerful!!
3. Collaborate with others
People say sharing is caring and that is why sharing is so effin beautiful. If you even decide to share and collaborate at the same time then that is double the benefit people get.
So how does this facebook collaboration looks like?
Well this is about generating content of value for other people’s sites. This is known in the blog world as Guest Posting.
In other words, to write or participate in someone’s else page.
There may be blogs out there that you follow and like what they talk about. If it’s not your case you can also find topics of your interest or some business area someone is writing about.
The strategy is to write a guest post for someone else.
This kind of post is not about yourself or your product. It’s about talking of some topic of interest for that other person’s audience.
For instance, if I write about web pages and your service is about psychology, then maybe you can write a post of how psychology affects websites, or maybe you have another idea of how to combine your specialty with the other person’s job.
The important thing is to create value both for the other page and for their audience so the content has a better chance to be shared. And remember to ask for permission, be honest, and polite when you ask someone to write on his blog.
More intrusive techniques to increase your social media followers
4. An advertisement on Facebook ADS
When you’ve been sometime producing content for your page and increasing visibility you already probably have one article that was especially liked by your audience. That post with lots of likes, shares, and comments.
Also if your service or product has an interesting value proposition for some potential customers, or simply if you’ve been writing for sometime and you keep on improving.
In any case you can always invest a bit of money to get followers with facebook ADS. With this kind of advertisement you can select which can of people you would like to see your post. What interests do they have, where they live, how old are they, and many many filters to choose from so you get to your ideal client.
Here I want to empathize as always that there are no magic recipes.
It doesn’t matter how much money you pay if your page is a ‘piece of shit’ or your product is garbage then you are not going to get good quality followers.
Then, how to do so your page is not a ‘piece of shit’? Easy:
1. Create your own content
2. Bring value with quality information to your audience
3. Speak from your heart being honest and telling your story
5. Invite people you know and ask them to share your page
This method is probably self explanatory and I’m not saying anything you don’t already know. However, I must mention this because in the beginning stages is the most effective method to get the machine rolling.
When you start your online entrepreneurial journey one of the biggest challenges is to increase visibility and get people to know you. Your friends and acquaintances probably wouldn’t mind liking your page to help you out. The issue arises if you don’t invite them, because how the heck are they going to know that you have a facebook page?
Besides from invites you can also ask those people to share an article they find interesting every now and then.
As I mentioned in collaborations sharing is one of the most effective techniques to increase followers and visibility.
6. Do some sort of giveaway or event
Even though I don’t really like this tactic I must admit that it can be very effective in some cases. You’ve probably seen it hundreds of times especially in events and restaurants.
Does this sound familiar? :
Like my page, share the post, and you will enter a giveaway to get 1 free massage, 2 free food dishes, or 3 free hair salon sessions (literally it doesn’t matter what they give away) This marketing strategy or similar ones are an ‘oldie’ move and they keep being used cause they work well.
So if you have a product or service you would like to giveaway in order to increase visibility and get people to share your stuff this can be a simple effective strategy.
In fact I have a friend who has won a couple giveaways of this sort because he participates in all of them, and he has gone out to dinner for free more than once.
Well this is all for this short introduction to some ideas to increase your page likes on social media. In the future we will go in depth a bit more in all this techniques to see how to work on them step by step.
You know each wednesday in this ‘anti-marketing- section we will analyze techniques and marketing strategies with critical thinking, ideas and common sense.
